In 2025, Nigeria imported products worth approximately US$54.4 billion from international markets. Compared with 2021, when imports totaled $42.1 billion, this represented a significant 29.2% increase over the five-year period.


On a year-over-year basis, Nigeria's spending on imported goods rose by 3.7%, up from $52.4 billion in 2024.


Among the country's most important imported commodities were refined petroleum products, crude oil, passenger vehicles, and telecommunications devices such as smartphones. Together, these major product groups accounted for more than 20% of Nigeria's total import value in 2025.


According to 2025 exchange-rate averages, the Nigerian naira strengthened by 6.4% against the US dollar compared with the previous year. A firmer naira reduced the relative cost of imports priced in US dollars for Nigerian buyers.

Nigeria's Key Import Suppliers

Recent trade statistics indicate that roughly 73.3% of Nigeria's imported goods originated from the following major supplier countries:

2.Belgium (11.6%)

3.India (10.2%)

4.United States (6.7%)

5.Netherlands (3.8%)

6.United Arab Emirates (3.7%)

7.France (2.7%)

8.Saudi Arabia (2.5%)

From a regional standpoint, Asia supplied 37.2% of Nigeria's total imports by value, while Europe contributed 29.1%. North America accounted for another 5.8%.


Smaller portions came from African countries (2.8%), Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean (2.3%), and Oceania (0.3%), mainly Australia and New Zealand.


With a population estimated at 233.3 million, Nigeria's 2025 import spending equated to roughly $225 per person, higher than the $210 per capita recorded in 2024.

The following product categories generated the highest import values for Nigeria during 2025. Percentages below represent each category's share of total Nigerian imports.

1.Mineral fuels including oil: US$8.3 billion (15.3%)

2.Machinery including computers: $6.1 billion (11.1%)

3.Electrical machinery and equipment: $5.3 billion (9.7%)

4.Vehicles: $5.1 billion (9.3%)

5.Plastics and plastic articles: $2.7 billion (5%)

6.Iron or steel products: $1.8 billion (3.4%)

7.Cereals: $1.4 billion (2.6%)

8.Manmade filaments: $1.3 billion (2.5%)

9.Pharmaceuticals: $1.2 billion (2.2%)


Furniture, lighting, bedding, signs, and prefabricated buildings: $1.1 billion (2%)


Combined, these top 10 import categories represented approximately 63.1% of Nigeria's total import spending in 2025.


Fastest-Growing Nigerian Import Categories

Among the leading import sectors, manmade filaments recorded the most dramatic increase, soaring by 2,782% between 2024 and 2025.


The second-fastest expansion came from imports of furniture, bedding, lighting products, signs, and prefabricated structures, which jumped by 567.8% year over year.


Imports of iron and steel articles also climbed sharply with a 138.1% increase, while electrical machinery and equipment advanced by 122.5%.


By contrast, the only major category to experience a decline was mineral fuels including oil, which fell by 48% compared with 2024.
