In 2025, worldwide spending on imported cars reached approximately US$985 billion.
That figure represented 3.8% of total global imports for all product categories, which were valued at around $25.8 trillion during the year. This share was slightly lower than the 4.1% recorded in 2024.
Compared with 2021, when international car imports were worth $735.6 billion, the value of global car purchases increased by 33.9% over the five-year period.
On a year-over-year basis, however, worldwide spending on imported passenger vehicles edged down by 0.6%, slipping from $991.3 billion in 2024.
The world’s largest importers of cars in 2025 were the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Belgium. Together, these five countries accounted for 41.3% of total global spending on imported automobiles.
From a regional perspective, Europe remained the leading destination for imported cars, purchasing vehicles worth $472.8 billion or 48% of worldwide imports. North America ranked second with a 24.5% share, while Asian importers represented 18.8% of global car import spending.
Smaller shares were attributed to Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean (3.4%), Africa (2.64%), and Oceania (2.61%), mainly driven by Australia and New Zealand.
For reference purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) code for passenger cars and station wagons is 8703.

Leading Car Importing Countries
The following countries recorded the highest value of imported cars in 2025:
1.United States: US$183.8 billion (18.7% of global car imports)
2.Germany: $77.8 billion (7.9%)
3.United Kingdom: $61.7 billion (6.3%)
4.France: $42.3 billion (4.3%)
5.Belgium: $41.2 billion (4.2%)
6.Canada: $38.2 billion (3.9%)
7.Italy: $37.6 billion (3.8%)
8.Spain: $29.5 billion (3%)
9.mainland China: $23.1 billion (2.3%)
10.United Arab Emirates: $23.1 billion (2.3%)
11.Türkiye: $22.3 billion (2.3%)
12.Australia: $22.2 billion (2.3%)
13.Saudi Arabia: $21.1 billion (2.1%)
14.Poland: $21 billion (2.1%)
15.Mexico: $19.5 billion (2%)
Combined, these 15 nations represented 67.5% of total global car imports during 2025.
Among the leading import markets, the strongest year-over-year growth from 2024 to 2025 was recorded by:
· Spain (+26.2%)
· Türkiye (+26%)
· Poland (+11.3%)
· Mexico (+10.1%)
Meanwhile, several major markets experienced declines in imported car purchases, including:
· mainland China (-39.6%)
· United Arab Emirates (-17.6%)
· United States (-16.3%)
· Australia (-5.9%)
