1. What Is Trade Data?

Trade data refers to import and export statistics released by the customs authorities of various countries.

It originates from the customs’ quantitative and value-based records of traded goods — including first-hand bill of lading (B/L) and customs declaration data — used for investigation, analysis, supervision, and statistical services.

2. Which Countries Have Open Trade Data?

Currently, only a limited number of countries legally publish open trade data. These include:

·North America:

United States, Mexico, Panama, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica

·South America:

Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Guyana

·Asia:

India, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Thailand, the Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan

·Europe (16 countries + EU as a whole):

EU Member States: Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, and others

(Eurostat provides unified regional trade data, while member states also have individual platforms)

Other European countries: Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Norway, Switzerland, Poland, etc.

·Africa:

South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana, Uganda, Cameroon, Botswana, Namibia, and more

3. How to Use Trade Data

Some people say, “I’ve purchased trade data, but it’s not as useful as I expected — many results can’t be found.”

That could be due to data quality.

A high-quality trade data platform provides authentic, first-hand information sourced directly from bills of lading and customs declarations, representing real trade transactions.

Take Tendata as an example. It allows searches by HS Code, product name, importer name, or exporter name.

For instance, using the shelf HS Code 73089090, you can see that this year’s major export destinations for shelves include India, Turkey, China, Malaysia, and Mexico.

With accurate data, you can identify and prioritize target markets.

Once you’ve selected a market — say, Saudi Arabia, one of today’s most active import markets — you can use trade data to locate verified shelf buyers in that region.

Screening and Filtering

(1) Check purchase volume:

Identify companies with stable or increasing purchase volumes — these are high-quality, long-term prospects.

(2) Check purchase frequency:

Frequent buyers indicate consistent demand and stronger partnership potential.

(3) Check supplier changes:

If a buyer frequently switches suppliers, it may indicate price sensitivity or unstable cooperation — but it could also signal they’re seeking better partners.

(4) Check sourcing location:

Buyers who consistently purchase domestically tend to trust local suppliers, offering higher chances for successful collaboration.

Analyzing Potential Buyers

Before mass outreach, conduct in-depth research to understand the buyer’s purchasing behavior.

(1) Purchasing Habits Analysis:

Procurement cycle: When and how often do they purchase each year?

Price range: What’s their average purchase price? This helps determine if they target high-end, mid-range, or low-end products.

Number of suppliers: Do they rely on a single supplier or multiple? If multiple, you have a chance to become one of them.

(2) Existing Supplier Analysis:

Who are their current suppliers? (These are your competitors.)

What are the competitors’ supply volumes and prices?

Compare your own advantages — in quality, price, R&D, or service — to find your unique selling point.

For example:

“We noticed your company currently sources XX products from Company A. We offer stronger advantages in [technology/delivery time/price], and we’d love to be considered as an alternative supplier.”
