As one of the world's major trading nations, Japan ranked as the fourth-largest exporter globally in 2025, following China, the United States, and Germany. During that year, Japan exported goods valued at US$738.3 billion to international markets.

Compared with export earnings of $708 billion in 2024, this figure represents a 4.3% increase year over year. However, over a longer five-year period from 2021 to 2025, the total value of Japanese exports declined slightly by 2.5%, down from $757.5 billion.

Often referred to as the “Land of the Rising Sun,” Japan remains a leading economic and political force in Asia. In 2025, the United States became the largest destination for Japanese exports, overtaking mainland China after the two countries exchanged positions compared with the previous year.

Looking at global regions, about 59.2% of Japan's exports were shipped to other Asian countries, while 21.7% were delivered to North American markets. European buyers accounted for 12.5% of Japan's overseas shipments.

Smaller portions of exports were sent to Latin America (2.7%), excluding Mexico but including Caribbean economies, Oceania (2.6%)—primarily Australia and New Zealand—and Africa (1.4%).
