In 2023, worldwide hat exports and sales of similar headgear totaled an impressive US$14.1 billion. This figure represents a significant increase of 40.3% compared to five years earlier in 2019, when hat exports were valued at $10 billion. However, year-over-year, the overall value of hat exports saw a slight decline of -5.3% from $14.8 billion in 2022.


The top three countries leading hat exports globally are mainland China, Vietnam, and Bangladesh. These three nations collectively accounted for nearly three-fifths (57.1%) of total international hat exports in 2023.

Exported Hats by Material

Hats serve a variety of purposes including protection from the weather, religious practices, ceremonial events like graduations, safety, status symbols, and fashion accessories. Exported hats, often part of global hat exports, are crafted from diverse materials, reflecting their wide-ranging uses. In 2023, approximately three-fifths (60.7%) of globally exported hats were knitted or crocheted headgear made from textile fabrics including lace and felt. The countries with the highest increases in hat exports since 2019 include Vietnam (up 110.5%), the United States (up 95.8%), France (up 81.8%), Bangladesh (up 63%), and Germany (up 58%). Conversely, Hong Kong (down -38.1%) and Sweden (down -0.9%) saw declines in their hat exports over the same period.
